An Apple a day keeps the Doctor away
Washing and transport systems for fruit and vegetables have to be cleaned frequently and thoroughly. At one Italian company, small quantities of chlorine dioxide added to the water are saving precious time for employees operating an apple washing system.

The World Health Organisation recommends that everyone should eat 650 grams of fruit and vegetables every day – for example three apples.
To make sure fruit and vegetables are clean when they arrive at stores and supermarkets, they have to be thoroughly washed – preferably with hygienic, clean water. To achieve this, the water is treated with chlorine dioxide, which is continually added in just the right quantity by a Bello Zon
® CDK system. This prevents biofilms from forming on washing equipment and kills off spores, fungi, viruses, E. coli and listeria. It does not impair taste or smell and does not alter the appearance of the fruit. This means that chlorine dioxide satisfies food industry regulations.
Cleaning and disinfection with Bello Zon® CDK system
Chlorine dioxide can be produced by a Bello Zon® CDK system, which makes the chemical from a mixture of hydrochloric acid and sodium chlorite. In one hour the system can manufacture up to 10 kilograms of chlorine dioxide, which is added to the water by metering pumps.
Chlorine dioxide keeps fruit clean
Bello Zon® is used by an apple-washing plant in Italy. The efficient and reliable system regularly meters 0.2 – 0.4 ppm chlorine dioxide into the water. Since the system was installed there has been a noticeable reduction in biofilm in the transport and washing equipment. Now the transport pools only need to be cleaned every three weeks, whereas before it was a weekly task. Cleaning the washing equipment therefore takes much less time, which in turn means lower consumption of resources.
